Many adults in Singapore live with ADHD without fully realising how much it affects their work, relationships, and emotional wellbeing. While it is often associated with children, many adults continue to experience its challenges in ways that can feel exhausting and confusing.
ADHD can affect focus, organisation, emotional regulation, and the ability to manage daily responsibilities. Over time, this can lead to chronic stress, burnout, relationship difficulties, and a sense of underachievement despite one’s potential. ADHD counselling in Singapore can provide a supportive space to better understand these patterns and develop practical strategies for navigating everyday life.
At Brendan Counselling, I work with adults who may be struggling with ADHD-related challenges and who want to build a more sustainable and compassionate way of living and working.
Understanding Adult ADHD
ADHD in adulthood does not always look like the hyperactivity many people associate with the condition. Instead, it may show up in more subtle but deeply frustrating ways.
Many adults with ADHD describe feeling capable but constantly overwhelmed. They may have strong ideas and intentions but struggle to follow through consistently. Over time, this can lead to self-criticism, shame, or the belief that something is “wrong” with them.
Some adults only begin to explore the possibility of ADHD later in life, often after experiencing repeated burnout, workplace difficulties, or relationship conflicts.
ADHD counselling can help individuals better understand their patterns, develop supportive strategies, and reduce the emotional burden that often accompanies these challenges.
Signs ADHD May Be Affecting Your Life
ADHD can affect people in different ways, but some common experiences include:
- Feeling constantly overwhelmed by work or daily responsibilities
- Difficulty starting or completing tasks
- Chronic procrastination or avoidance
- Trouble organising time, priorities, or responsibilities
- Emotional reactivity or feeling easily overwhelmed by emotions
- Frequent conflict or misunderstandings in relationships
- Feeling mentally exhausted from trying to keep up with expectations
- Feeling capable but unable to sustain consistency
If several of these experiences feel familiar, ADHD counselling may help you explore these patterns and develop more supportive ways of managing them.
ADHD Burnout and Emotional Strain
Many adults with ADHD experience repeated cycles of burnout. They may push themselves very hard to meet expectations, only to feel completely drained afterwards.
This can be particularly common for individuals who have spent years masking or compensating for their struggles. Constantly trying to keep up with work, relationships, and responsibilities can create a sense of pressure that eventually becomes unsustainable.
ADHD counselling can help you understand these cycles and develop more realistic, sustainable ways of managing work, energy, and emotional wellbeing.
How ADHD Counselling Can Help
ADHD counselling focuses on helping individuals better understand how ADHD affects their thinking, emotions, and daily functioning.
Counselling may support you in:
- Understanding how ADHD influences your behaviour and emotional patterns
- Developing strategies for focus, organisation, and time management
- Building emotional regulation skills
- Reducing shame and self-criticism related to ADHD struggles
- Improving communication and relationships
- Finding sustainable ways to manage work demands and prevent burnout
Rather than focusing only on symptoms, counselling aims to support a deeper understanding of your experiences and help you develop strategies that work for your life and circumstances.
My Approach
I am Brendan, a counsellor based in Singapore with a Master’s in Counselling from Monash University.
My work has included supporting individuals, families, and young people navigating behavioural challenges, emotional regulation, relationship difficulties, and neurodivergence. I have experience working with clients across different life stages, including those dealing with work stress, family conflict, anxiety, and burnout.
In counselling, I aim to provide a supportive and non-judgemental space where clients can explore their experiences openly. Together, we work towards understanding patterns, building emotional awareness, and developing practical ways to navigate challenges.
